The Correspondence Between Particle Mesh Number and Mesh Aperture

The higher mesh number means the smaller particle size; the fewer mesh number means the larger particle size. Sieve size is the mesh aperture where particles can get through the screen. Use the screen number within 1-inch (25.4mm) screen to denote, so it is called as mesh number.

The specification of standard sieve in various countries is not the same. Frequently-used Taylor system takes apertures per inch as screen size, called mesh. For example, the sieve of 100 mesh means there are 100 screen holes on the screen per inch.

Tyler standard screen scale

The scale division of Tyler screen scale takes 200 mesh apertures, 0.074mm as the benchmark. Multiply or divide by n (n=1, 2, 3…) powder of the square root (1.414) of main mod 2, then we get mesh aperture, thicker or finer than 200 mesh. If we multiply or divide n powder of the fourth root of vice mod 2 by 0.074mm, we can get mesh apertures of a series of mesh numbers with much more specific scale division.

A plus or minus sign before mesh number denotes whether it can get through the screen hole of this mesh number. Minus means particles can get through the screen hole of this mesh number. That is to say the particle size is less than mesh size. Positive number denotes particles cannot get through the screen hole of this mesh number. That is to say the particle size is bigger than mesh size. For example, particles of -100mesh~+200mesh denote these particles can get through the screen hole of 100 mesh while cannot get through the screen hole of 200 mesh. When we filter particles of this mesh number, we should put particles of larger mesh number (200) under smaller mesh number (100). Then the remaining on the screen of larger mesh number is the particles of -100~+200 mesh.
