A Study on the Methods of Measuring Carbonate in Barium Hydroxide

    Barium hydroxide, which reacts with organic acid to form barium sops in the synthetic process, is an important raw material of liquid barium-zinc stabilizer. The main content of barium hydroxide and barium carbonate content are important indicators of testing barium hydroxide. It has a great effect on the reaction if the carbonate has a high level. Usually, we use acid-base neutralization to measure the main content of barium hydroxide, which concretely is to add appropriate water without carbon dioxide to dissolve, use standard solution of hydrochloric acid for titration, use phenolphthalein as indicator and figure out the content of barium hydroxide with the consumption of hydrochloric. Upon inquiry, there are two determination methods of barium carbonate content. The first one is to add bromophenol blue into the solution after measuring the main content, use standard solution of hydrochloric acid for titration and figure out the barium carbonate content with the consumption of hydrochloric acid. The other method is to add hydrochloric acid into the solution after measuring the main content, use standard solution of sodium hydroxide for titration and figure out the barium carbonate content with the consumption of sodium hydroxide. But there is a great difference between the two test methods. In view of the situation, it is necessary to conduct a system research on the methods of measuring barium carbonate content. In this way, a better method can be determined.

    We chose various analytical methods and conducted a test on each method. Finally we got the results as follows:

   Using bromophenol blue method to measure the barium carbonate content of barium hydroxide is much more accurate and reliable. The inspection result is much more precise. So we can choose bromophenol blue method to test and evaluate the barium carbonate content of barium hydroxide.
